The specifications of industrial plug and socket
The industrial plug and socket are relatively a simple product. The most important specifications are listed below.
The housing material: it describes the material that is used for making the outer shell of a plug or socket. The plastic, polyamide to be specific, is the most commonly used material.
The conductor material: the material used to make the conductor, such as the pins. Brass is the only choice at present.
The current: the main parameter when choosing an industrial plug or socket. There are 16a, 32a, 63a and 125a. The higher current option is also available. But that is for the special product.
The voltage: the voltage is the other important parameters. There are 110v, 220v, 380v, 415v, etc. The voltage ranges can be more versatile than the current. But it is known that only products with a voltage lower than 1000v are called industrial plug and socket. If the voltage is higher, it’s called super high voltage products.
Number of pins (poles): it defines how many pins or poles does a plug or socket has. Only the plug and socket have the same number of pins can be mated.
Ingress protection (IP) rating: the degree of how a socket or plug is dustproof and waterproof. For waterproof industrial socket and plug, IP44, IP45, IP67 are the main categories. The large the number is, the better the dustproof and waterproof performance is.
The applications of industrial plug and socket
The industrial plug and socket can be used literally in both indoor and outdoor application across various industrial such as manufacture, agriculture, chemistry, food, airport, wharf, ships, metallurgy, power plant, construction, instrument, solar power, wind power, nuclear power, entertainment, automation, packing industry, air conditioner, lighting, transportation, etc.
Different structures are designed to meet the various application environment requirements.
According to the way the product is installed, there are the mobile type, exposed installation type, and hidden installation type.
According to the protection configuration, there are the fused type, circuit breaker equipped type and non-protection type.
According to the interlock configuration, there are the mechanical interlocked type, electric interlocked type and non-interlocked type.
There are also industrial socket and plug with and without an adaptor.
The advantages of industrial plug and socket
Compared with the household plug and socket, the industrial products have 3 significant advantages:
1) The color code. The color of an industrial plug and socket is strictly bound with the voltage. For example, the blue products have a voltage of 200v, while the red refers to 380v. By knowing this, you can’t be wrong when choosing voltage.
2) Anti-electric shock design. For industrial plug and socket, the earth pin is longer than the positive & negative pin meaning that in any case, the application will be grounded first before it is electrified. Very safe design.
3) High protection rating. When using an industrial plug and socket, people are well protected by the material with high insolating grade so that people can’t touch the electrified parts. Needless to say, there are IP67 waterproof product which further protects people’s security in severe environment.
4) The load capacity. The household plug and socket are normally 10A, they can hardly carry 4000W power application. On the contrary, the cable of the industrial socket and plug has a sectional area of 1.5mm2. They can easily carry more KW.
5) Lifespan. For a household plug or socket, the maximum times of insertion is around 4500-5000. The industrial plug and socket, however, has an average lifespan of more than 10 years. The allowed times of insertion is up to 100,000.
Generally, there are 4 things to consider before buying.
- Types: what kind of industrial plug and socket do you need? To be specific, where are the connectors used and how many pins do you need are two of the mostly asked questions you need to answer.
- Environmental requirements: if the industrial plug and socket is used in corrosive, wet or high-temperature environment, you need to choose the high-end plug and socket products.
- Electric condition: the electric property is an important parameter to examine. Each application has its own requirement for the electric property, such as the current and voltage. If the industrial socket and plug doesn’t meet these requirements, it may damage the application at the worst case, which you definitely want to avoid.
- Mechanical performance: things like the contact area of the pin, the frequency of insertion, the allowed dimension tolerance is not directly related to the quality, but you still need to check.
Why can’t you use household plug and socket for industrial applications?
There are two reasons.
First, the industrial application uses 3 phase electricity, which decides that the industrial socket and plug will be completely different from the connectors for 2 phase electricity household purpose.
Second, the household plug and socket has no sufficient security configuration to meet the industrial application requirements.
How to wire an industrial socket?
Generally speaking, the industrial socket is very simple to get the wire connected. The detail can be seen in the following image. The steps are as follows:
- Remove the two screw at the front end.
- Make a hole at the other end.
- Loosen the screw of fire wire.
- Put the fire wire in the screw hole and tighten the screw.
- Loosen the screw of the zero wire.
- Put the zero line in the screw hole and tighten it.
- Tighten the screw at the wire cover.
- The socket is well wired.
